Pick up a brochure from the Washington, DC-based American Chemistry Council and you’re sure to notice the slogan it uses on all of its marketing pieces these days: “Plastics Make it Possible.”
Although the emphasis in consumer technology is on a different material – silicon – industry sources say the advances in consumer technology we take for granted couldn’t be delivered without plastic. And uses for the material are exploding.
The Plastic Industry Association’s annual Plastics Market Watch was published as the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show ended in Las Vegas. The association noted that the nearly 4,000 companies and 200,000 delegates in attendance at the show almost all relied on plastic, a key element in the evolution and production of consumer electronics.
The association’s Plastics Market Watch says plastics play a “power role” in the emerging Internet of Things and in digital products like televisions, smartphones, tablet computers, and laptops.
“People don’t see plastics in consumer electronics initially,” says Plastics Industry Association technical and industry affairs VP Terry Peters, “but once they recognize that there are items in their life that would be impossible without plastics, their opinions change and they realize how critical plastics are to their everyday items.”
"Walking the [CES] show floor and looking at the myriad products, attendees start to see plastics and polymers everywhere,” notes Plastics Market Watch. In fact, says the association, plastic is essential to the engineering, design, function, features and performance of cutting-edge technologies.
