[리서치페이퍼=Cedric Dent 기자] The PGA tour includes a notorious cheater.
That's the shocking revelation from a Golf Digest article written by an anonymous pro.
"There's exactly one guy who is known to mis-mark his ball by two or three inches," the anonymous author wriites. "Ask any player about cheating, and they'll all tell you the same name."
Issues related to marking balls have risen in importance this season.Lexi Thompson lost a major tournament this year after a penalty related to where she marked her ball on a green.Phil Mickelson says some members of the PGA tour are "loose" with marking balls.
"Marking balls" refers to the practice of picking up a ball so another golfer can play, typically leaving a coin at the ball's spot. The golfer then returning the ball - to the same location - to resume play. The cheater described in the anonymous Golf Digest article is said to choose a more advantageous location when replacing his ball.
The author says he was paired with the cheater recently and got a first-hand look at the cheating. He says the player used his hand to hide the ball's location and "picks up his coin so fast that you almost can't be certain of what you've just seen."
The cheater is also said to wear a loose shirt and use a long putter, which could hide another kind of cheating: steadying the upper end of the shaft against the body. The Golf Digest author says he declined to sign the cheater's scorecard after they played together because of this practice.A brouhaha followed in the scoring trailer.
The article includes enough details for other members of the PGA Tour to identify the cheater. But the author says that's not necessary because his identity is already widely known. "Everyone knows he's a cheater," he says.
