Chapin’s Bryan, Blythewood’s Stalvey lead women’s city championship

Chapin’s Mary Chandler Bryan and Parker Stalvey fired matching 72s Tuesday at Fort Jackson Golf Club to share the first-round lead in the Sonic Columbia City Women’s Golf Championship.

Both Bryan, who played at the College of Charleston, and Stalvey, a rising junior at Blythewood High, posted 37-35 rounds on FJGC’s Wildcat Course.At even par, they forged a two-shot lead over Catherine Loper.

Ann Elizabeth Gore, a rising junior at Presbyterian College who played at Lexington High, is fourth at 5-over 77, with former champion Kathryn Miranda and Christine Hamrick another shot back at 78.Another former champion, Karin Wolfe, posted a 79, and Ella Stalvey, Parker’s sister and a rising seventh grader, had an 80.

Bryan, whose brother Wesley won the RBC Heritage this year, has been busy in recent days.She tied for second in the CGA Carolinas Women’s Open, played Friday-Sunday in Wilmington, N.C., and completed in a U.S.Women’s Open qualifier north of Atlanta on Monday before the City tourney.

Stalvey finished fifth in the 5A State High School championship and earned all-state honors last fall.In 2015, she advanced to the national finals in her age group in the Drive, Chip and Putt competition.

The final round begins at 9 a.m.Wednesday with a shotgun start.

State Juniors Golf Championship

Levi Moody, a rising senior at Travelers Rest High, sizzled over the back nine, posted a 5-under 67 and leads after the first-round in the South Carolina Junior Golf Championship at Columbia Country Club.

Moody used his 4-under 32 over the finishing holes to establish a two-shot advantage in the 54-hole event.

Ryan Marter, a stalwart in A.C.Flora’s powerhouse program who will play for Wofford College this fall, joins Walker Jones, a rising senior at Sumter’s Wilson Hall, Harry Reynolds of Greenville and defending champion Trent Phillips of Inman in a tie for second with 3-under 69s.

In the boys’ 13-14 division, Trey Crenshaw and Mason Tucker, both from Lancaster, share the lead with 72s.

The field will be cut to the low 61 and ties after the second round in the boys’ 15-18 division, and the low 16 and ties in the boys’ 13-14 competition.

U.S.Senior Open qualifying

Bradley Rollinson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and Allan Small (Savannah, Ga.) shot 1-under 71s Tuesday at Wexford Golf Club on Hilton Head Island to earn berths in the U.S.Senior Open Championship.

Steve Larick, head professional at Golden Hills in Lexington, earned the first-alternate spot with a 72.The national tourney will be played June 29-July 2 at Salem CC in Peabody, Mass.
