Dickinson's Hunter Myran chips the ball down the sixth green during the state class A boys' golf tournament at the Grand Forks Country Club near Grand Forks, on June 5, 2017
GRAND FORKS — The Dickinson High boys golf team sits in 11th place after the first day at the North Dakota Class A Boys Golf State Meet at Grand Forks Country Club.
The Midgets finished Monday with an overall score of 344 — 11 strokes behind Minot and eight strokes ahead of Bismarck Legacy. The meet concludes Tuesday.
"It's a very tough course — a lot of trouble you can get into," Dickinson head coach Sara Berglund said. "There are some sharp doglegs, and of course the sand traps are placed right where you want to hit. It's one of those courses where you have to really play smart and have good course management."
Junior Dylan Pokorny led the Midgets with an 83 in the first round. He was followed by senior Jerzy Martin (85), senior Davis Donnan (88) and junior Hunter Myran (88).Junior Aidan Levorsen carded a 96, and freshman Logan Greef finished at 103, but neither score factored into the team's score.
"Everybody ran into difficulties on the course — maybe having to punch out of the trees — and everybody had a few holes where they had a double or a triple, but I was happy to see them come back from it," Berglund said. "I look at Dylan. He started shaky right away — he was hitting the ball well, just got into some tough situations — but he came back and really played well on the back nine.Same with Jerzy — his first nine was a tough start, but he comes back and shoots an 85."
Grand Forks Red River leads the field with a score of 302, and West Fargo Sheyenne (312) and Grand Forks Central (315) round out the top three.
"From today, they want to go in tomorrow looking for improvement," Berglund said. "They want to play a little smarter on the holes that were tougher for them today. And on the second day of the state tournament, they want to go out and have fun, play relaxed. They'll play better if they do that."
