"I was confident going into today," says Jed Baranczyk.

The young golfer and co-player of the year in Wisconsin's Fox River Classic Conference began the day in tenth place after bogeying on two of his first three holes. He found his rhythm in the middle of his round, however, capping off the day with three straight birdies. He finished the day with two birdies on his final three holes to share the lead with  Hartland Arrowhead's Piercen Hunt.

Bay Port High School golf coach Craig Buchinger was impressed by his pupil's ball striking in the windy conditions.Baranczyk said the wind wasn't a problem, since he is used to playing in those springtime conditions. He also has a good reputation on the course, having finished third at D1 state as a freshman in 2015.

"I hit the ball really well," Baranczyk said. "I made a couple putts, but not as many as I should have.Hopefully, tomorrow we can get a couple more to fall and shoot a good number."

Bay Port finished the first day in fifth place, which means Baranczyk and the Pirates will miss out on the final pairing, which consists of the top four teams. Those four are Arrowhead, Milwaukee Marquette, Sheboygan North, and Eau Claire Memorial.

"He would have loved to be in that final group of top four teams," Buchinger said.
