Union Grove High School sophomore Connor Brown was a model of consistency Monday during the first round of Division 1 play in the WIAA Boys Golf Championships at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona.
Brown, one of four Racine County qualifiers for the two-day state tournament, shot a 4-over-par 76 and was tied with sixth others for 10th place heading into Tuesday's final round.
Union Grove teammate and senior Eric Chambers shot a 9-over 81 and was tied for 40th, Burlington senior Justin Meseberg shot an 11-over 83 and was tied for 55th and Case senior Zach Shawhan shot a 13-over 85 and was tied for 69th.Brown, Chambers and Meseberg all are making their first appearances at state.
Swanson said that because of the windy conditions, the greens were playing fast, which kept scores up in general.Jed Baranzyk of Bay Port and Piercen Hunt of Hartland Arrowhead shot par-72s Monday and shared the Division 1 first-round lead.Tied for second a shot back were Matt Polivka of Muskego and Jake Schroeckenthaler of Monona Grove.
Just four shots behind the co-leaders heading into the final round, Brown is in a good position to move up into medal contention, Swanson said. The top six earn medals.
Chambers, who shot 41-40, had some issues with his approach shots and short game, Swanson said.
